Over the last few years, different studies have yielded theories about dairy products being related to many health issues. Some have even stated that drinking three or more glasses of milk a day can lead to bone breakage or premature death, which was inconceivable just a few decades ago. Within this new perspective of dairy, many have linked dairy products to an increased mucus and phlegm production in our bodies. “Don’t drink milk, or your nasal congestion will get worse!” is an oft-repeated advice that you may be tired of hearing (we feel you!) while, for example, having a cold. But, more importantly, is it truth?
Up until now, no study has shown evidence of dairy consumption causing or worsening nasal secretions. Therefore, any attempt to link dairy products to sinusitis should be put into doubt. What’s the answer, then?
As it always happens with science, there are nuances that should be taken into account when approaching this particular issue. For example, those people who suffer from atopic syndrome and develop an allergic hypersensitvity to dairy can experience a wide range of symptoms, especially those of an allergic rhinitis, when ingesting milk, cheese, yogurt or ice cream.
These symptoms, which are caused by an immunological reaction to the allergen, often give rise to an inflammation of the nasal cavity that, at some extent, may also affect the sinuses. In such a case, you could indeed face a case of sinusitis derived from an allergic reaction. But this, of course, is a specific correlation that doesn’t allow us to link dairy products to sinusitis.
Moderation is key
Unless you are allergic to dairy products or suffer from lactose intolerance, you shouldn’t keep milk out of your diet. Milk and products made from it are packed with protein, vitamin D and calcium, which is essential to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis. However, when not having it in moderation, milk and other dairy products can increase your cholesterol levels, especially those that are rich in saturated fats.
Finally, moderation is key in order to have a balanced diet and minimize risks of certain illnesses. But if you have ever been concerned about dairy products messing up with your nose, get that idea out of your head. As far as we know, it still remains a ‘myth’.
